About This Audiobook

*Black Enough* isn’t just another YA anthology—it’s a literary mixtape where each track drops you into a different rhythm of Black adolescence. One minute you’re sweating through a Brooklyn block party with Justyce McAllister (yes, *that* Justyce, in a Nic Stone story that’ll gut you), the next you’re decoding the unspoken rules of a predominantly white prep school with a protagonist who’s exhausted by being the “exception.” The brilliance here isn’t just the lineup (though the roster—Coe Booth, Dhonielle Clayton, Jason Reynolds—is absurdly stacked) but how these stories *talk to each other*: a quiet poem about hair politics sits next to a rowdy, dialect-rich tale about family cookouts, forcing you to hold both the intimate and the explosive in the same breath.

Bahni Turpin and Ron Butler’s narration is a masterclass in tonal range—Turpin’s voice shifts from the wry, weary drawl of a teen who’s heard it all to the breathless urgency of a kid on the verge of a breakdown, while Butler nails the swagger of young Black masculinity without ever tipping into caricature. The audiobook’s production leans into this contrast, using subtle pauses and volume shifts to mimic the way these stories *feel*: sometimes like a secret whispered in your ear, sometimes like a mic drop in a crowded room. If you’ve ever rolled your eyes at the “universal teen experience” trope, this is the antidote—messy, specific, and unapologetically *for* Black teens, not just *about* them.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit: I approached *Black Enough* skeptical of anthologies—too often they feel like a greatest-hits album where the tracks don’t quite vibe. But within 20 minutes, Ibi Zoboi’s curation proved me wrong. The opening story, ‘Half a Moon’ by Renee Watson, hooks you with its lush, almost musical prose (Turpin’s narration here is *chefs-kiss*—she makes the protagonist’s grief sound like a melody), and then *bam*, you’re hit with Jay Coles’ ‘Black Enough,’ a story so raw in its depiction of colorism and class within Black communities that I actually paused the audio to sit with it. That whiplash is intentional, and it’s the collection’s strength: these stories refuse to let you get comfortable. The narration is *almost* flawless—Turpin’s ability to voice teen girls without making them sound like stereotypes is criminally underrated, and Butler’s performance in ‘The (R)evolution of Nigeria Jones’ (the closing story) gives Tracee Ellis Ross’s *The High Note* energy, all fire and vulnerable edges. My only gripe? The pacing in a few stories feels rushed—‘Kissing Sarah Smart’ by Justina Ireland, for example, could’ve benefited from a slower burn to let the tension simmer. And while the production quality is top-notch, the abrupt transitions between stories (no musical interludes or even a beat of silence) can jolt you out of the moment. But those are quibbles. What lingers is how *alive* this audiobook feels—like eavesdropping on a conversation you weren’t meant to hear, but desperately need to. If you’re a Black teen, it’ll feel like recognition; if you’re not, it’s an education. Either way, it’s unforgettable.
