Joe Arden doesn’t just *read* the hero, he *is* him: that rough, world-weary rasp makes even the most clichéd lines (‘I don’t do relationships’) sound like a threat wrapped in a dare. Lidia Dornet, meanwhile, turns the heroine’s vengeance into something seductive, her delivery dripping with controlled fury one moment and vulnerability the next. It’s a performance that sells the push-pull dynamic far better than the page ever could. The story itself is a tightrope walk between suspense and romance, and Harris mostly sticks the landing. The military details feel lived-in (no hand-wavy ‘classified ops’ nonsense here), and the action scenes crackle with urgency. My only gripe? The mid-book sag. For all its momentum, there’s a 45-minute stretch where the emotional back-and-forth starts to feel like wheel-spinning—like the characters are arguing in circles just to delay the inevitable. And while the steamy scenes are *scorching*, one transition from fight to fornication felt jarringly abrupt, even for this genre. Still, the final act redeems it with a twist that’s both earned and brutal. If you love your romance with a side of ‘holy crap, did they just do that?’, this audiobook delivers—just maybe skip the coffee during the last hour unless you want to mainline adrenaline.
