Avery Caris’s performance is the standout here; she nails Aurora’s mix of vulnerability and steel, especially in scenes where she’s forced to rely on Chance despite her better judgment. There’s a moment early on where she laughs—*actually* laughs—at his absurd confidence, and Caris makes it sound like a weapon. Aaron Shedlock’s Chance is all smooth arrogance, but he smartly underplays it, letting the character’s occasional flashes of sincerity (like when he admits why he avoids commitment) land harder. The suspense plot—a search for Aurora’s missing sister—could’ve felt tacked on, but Harris integrates it seamlessly. The clues unfold at a clip that keeps the audiobook bingeable, and the narrators handle the shifts between romance and danger with ease. My only critique? The villain’s reveal in the final act leans a bit too heavily on a trope (the ‘obvious red herring’), and I wished the audio mixing had more distinction between flashback scenes and present-day action—sometimes the time jumps felt abrupt. That said, the *chemistry* carries it. The scene where Chance teaches Aurora to shoot (yes, it’s as charged as it sounds) is worth the price of admission alone.
