The Virtual Voice narrator’s delivery is polarizing—some will miss the gravitas of a human performer, but I found its flat affect *enhanced* the story’s claustrophobic dread. When the narrator intones, *“Torpedo in the water,”* there’s no dramatic inflection, just the chilling certainty of physics. It’s a masterstroke for a book where emotion is a distraction from survival. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. Maddox’s obsession with tactical detail—sonar frequencies, reactor outputs, hydrodynamic drag—will thrill naval buffs but may test casual listeners. A few chapters drag as the sub *creeps* (literally) through patrol sectors, and the Virtual Voice’s monotone doesn’t help.
