David de Vries nails this performance with a delivery that’s equal parts James Bond monologue and late-night paranoia podcast. His portrayal of Daniel Roper, a spy whose cynicism is only outweighed by his desperation for purpose, is effortlessly compelling, especially during the story’s quieter moments of reflection. Where the narration falters slightly is in the abrupt tonal shifts—some expository sections fall flat with an almost robotic detachment, making Katsu’s razor-sharp dialogue feel flat in comparison. That said, the production team deserves credit for the slick sound design: distant radio static, muffled office chatter, and sudden silences that’ll have you craning your earbuds. The plot’s reliance on coincidence feels a tad convenient at times, and the ending, while satisfying, leans heavily on ambiguity without fully earning it. Still, *Black Vault*’s relentless momentum and de Vries’ commanding narration make it a standout for fans of tight, conspiracy-laced thrillers. Just don’t expect the emotional punch of a le Carré—this one’s all about the chase, not the fallout.
