I approached *Blood and Empire* expecting another high-fantasy doorstopper, but Maxwell’s debut into this new saga blew me away with its ruthless ambition. The magic system is clever but underutilized, which frustrated me at first, but the political maneuvering more than compensates. Virtual Voice’s narration isn’t *bad*—it’s just inconsistent. Some chapters feel like they’re being read by a sleep-deprived grad student, while others have a surprising emotional punch that lingers. The production quality is solid, but the occasional audio artifact (a slight echo, a clipped word) pulled me out of the story more than once. The biggest critique?
