The plot unfolds like a scalpel cut: deliberate, precise, and yes, painful. There’s a secondary character—Rurik, Kagen’s brother—whose dynamic alone is worth the listen, a toxic cocktail of devotion and resentment that simmers beneath every line. Now, the narration: Eric G. Dove *is* Kagen. His performance is all restrained power, with a Romanian lilt that makes the vampire’s age feel tangible. The pacing, though, is where opinions might divide. The first third is *slow*—more mood piece than plot engine—and while I loved the atmospheric build, listeners craving action might fidget. My only real critique? The female characters, though compelling, sometimes feel like satellites in Kagen’s orbit rather than fully fleshed-out forces. Still, the audiobook’s production is flawless—no jarring edits, no volume spikes—just Dove’s voice and the creeping dread of Dawn’s world.
