When Dinnie deadpans, *“I was kidnapped by my aunt and uncle, which is supposedly legal,”* Siegfried’s delivery is so perfectly dry, I actually laughed out loud. That’s the audiobook’s superpower: it makes Dinnie’s sarcasm *land* without ever veering into caricature. The story’s structure—short, vignette-like chapters—works brilliantly in audio. Siegfried’s pacing mirrors Dinnie’s emotional whiplash: one minute she’s seething about Swiss chocolate (how *dare* it be good?), the next she’s quietly processing her father’s absence. My only critique? The side characters sometimes blur together; a few more distinct vocal tags for Dinnie’s classmates would’ve added depth. And while the ending ties up neatly, I wished for one more scene of Dinnie reckoning with her old life—her growth feels so real, I wanted to linger in it. Still, for a 4.5-hour listen, this packs more heart and humor than many twice its length.
