When McNeil interrogates a suspect, King’s delivery is a masterclass in restraint: the pauses aren’t just for drama, they’re the sound of a man calculating how far he can push. The production is crisp, with no distracting edits, though I’d have loved a touch more ambient noise—Edinburgh’s wind howling through the streets, maybe—to deepen the immersion. The story’s real strength lies in its refusal to romanticize trauma. The victim’s psychiatry practice isn’t a red herring; it’s the core of the mystery, and Carson weaves in ethical dilemmas (patient confidentiality vs. justice) without preaching. That said, the secondary characters sometimes feel underdeveloped—McNeil’s team, in particular, could use more distinct voices, both in writing and narration. And while the 5-hour runtime keeps things taut, the final act’s resolution arrives almost *too* abruptly, as if Carson trusted the atmosphere to carry the landing. Still, for fans of Ian Rankin’s Rebus or Denise Mina’s gritty realism, this is a worthy addition to the canon. Just don’t listen before bed unless you enjoy dreaming about bloodstained case files.
