I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at first. *Another* stranded-space-marines story? But *Boneshaker* won me over by refusing to play by the usual rules. Dalzelle’s strength isn’t in alien set-pieces (though there’s a fantastic, claustrophobic sequence in a derelict ship) but in the *people*—specifically, Lieutenant Jacob Brown, a protagonist who’s competent without being a Gary Stu, funny without being a quip machine, and deeply, relatablely *tired*. The plot unfolds like a pressure cooker: slow simmering tension punctuated by bursts of violence, with a mystery that feels organic rather than contrived. My only gripe? The worldbuilding sometimes relies a little too heavily on characters explaining tech or politics mid-conversation, which can pull you out of the moment. Now, the narration: Paul Heitsch is *perfect* for this. His Brown isn’t a gravel-voiced action hero; he’s a guy who sounds like he just chugged his third coffee and is *done* with your nonsense. The supporting cast gets distinct voices—no small feat in a dialogue-heavy book—and Heitsch sells the humor without overplaying it. My one critique? A few female characters default to a similar cadence, which occasionally muddles who’s speaking. But the production itself is flawless: no volume spikes, no awkward pauses, just a seamless listen that makes the 7+ hours fly by. If you love military sci-fi that’s more *Band of Brothers* in space than *Halo*, this is a must-listen—just don’t expect easy answers or clean victories.
