About This Audiobook

Kate’s life is sinking faster than her husband’s self-esteem when a school auction prize—an all-expenses-paid trip to a Florida timeshare—promises redemption in the form of sunshine, margaritas, and zero accountability. But the SeaView at Sandpiper Bay isn’t just a glorified timeshare; it’s a black hole of bad decisions disguised as a family getaway. Boren’s razor-sharp satire dissects the modern American fantasy of escape, where the only thing more toxic than the clogged hotel drain is the clogged thinking that got Kate here in the first place. The comedy hits like a piñata stuffed with midlife regrets, and the setting—sun-bleached, soulless Florida—is the perfect backdrop for a story that’s equal parts tragedy and farce. Short, sweet, and mercilessly funny, this novella is the literary equivalent of a cheap but satisfying cocktail: you won’t remember the aftertaste, but you’ll be craving another round immediately. Christina Applegate’s narration is the cherry on top, turning Kate’s existential spiral into a performance that’s equal parts exhausted mom and runaway train conductor—you’ll laugh until your stomach hurts, then laugh some more because you know you’re part of the problem too.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Christina Applegate’s narration is the secret weapon of this audiobook, transforming Kate’s passive-aggressive narration of her own life into a performance that’s equal parts weary and wicked. Her timing is impeccable, especially during the cringe-inducing scenes where Kate’s desperation curdles into delusion, and the way she sells the Florida spirit—sweet, sticky, and slightly sinister—makes the setting feel like a character all its own. That said, the production occasionally drops into a tinny, hollow sound that makes the timeshare’s shabby glamour feel unintentionally like a bad Zoom call. The story itself is a tight, 115-minute novella that packs a punch, but it’s so relentlessly bleak in its humor that I found myself craving a shred of hope by the end—though to be fair, that might be the point. Kate’s spiral from hopeful wife to ‘maybe I’ll just live in the gift shop’ is darkly hilarious, and Boren’s eye for the absurd in everyday misery is spot-on. If you’re looking for a comedy that doesn’t flinch from the unglamorous side of adulthood, this one’s for you. Just don’t blame me if you start questioning all your life choices by the time Kate’s kids start calling her ‘Katie’ out of pity.
