I went into Breaking Midnight expecting a standard true crime unraveling, but what unfolded was something far more unsettling—a memoir that reads like a bad heist gone wrong, complete with compromised morals and a protagonist who can’t resist the thrill of the con. Linda Jones’s narration sells Walker’s downfall with a mix of weary resignation and reckless charm, making his choices feel personal rather than just criminal. The moment Walker describes cutting a deal with a cartel boss still calling the shots from prison is the kind of irony that sticks in your ribs. If the story had tighter pacing in the middle act—Walker’s early DEA days drag a bit—the audiobook would’ve been a knockout. Gary Tiedemann’s contributions are stellar, particularly his portrayal of the cartel’s enforcer, whose calm, calculated delivery makes the threats feel visceral. The production quality is solid, though the occasional background noise in outdoor scenes feels like an afterthought. Still, this isn’t just a tale of a dirty cop; it’s a cautionary fable about the seduction of power and the rot that sets in when the badge becomes just another accessory.
