I approached *Breve historia del islam* expecting a dry recitation of Islamic history, but Bendriss’s razor-sharp prose and Krochmal’s authoritative narration turned it into a listening experience I didn’t want to pause. Krochmal’s voice is the perfect vessel for this material—deep, resonant, and free of the over-the-top theatricality that can plague historical nonfiction. He delivers Bendriss’s insights with a steady, unhurried pace that feels like a wise professor breaking down complex ideas without dumbing them down. That said, the audiobook isn’t flawless. The production occasionally swallows some of Krochmal’s softer consonants, particularly in crowded scenes like the Battle of Yarmouk, which made it hard to catch every detail. And while the book’s focus on early Islam is a strength, I found myself wishing for more exploration of how Islamic thought evolved beyond the seventh century—Bendriss’s scope is tight, almost too tight for such a vast subject. Still, these are minor quibbles. The audiobook’s pacing, the narrator’s command of tone, and the way it humanizes figures like Umar ibn al-Khattab make it a standout. If you’ve ever wanted Islam’s story told with nuance and narrative drive, this is the audiobook to queue up.
