Distant Star

I went into *Distant Star* expecting a political thriller, but what I got was something far more unsettling—a character study of a man who weaponizes poetry as easily as he wields a gun. Walter Krochmal’s narration is a masterclass in restraint; he doesn’t overact Arturo B.’s shifts from charming to chilling, instead letting the text’s inherent menace do the work. The audiobook’s pacing is tight, with Krochmal’s measured delivery mirroring the novella’s slow-burn dread. My only critique? The production occasionally muffles some of the dialogue in quieter scenes, which is jarring when Bolaño’s razor-sharp dialogue is at its best. That said, the narration elevates what could’ve been a forgettable character sketch into something haunting. Bolaño’s exploration of how art and violence collide feels timelier than ever, and Krochmal’s performance ensures it stays with you long after the final sentence.
