About This Audiobook

Henley Hendrix’s life is a symphony—until it shatters. After a horrific crash claims the life of her closest bandmate and dearest friend, the rising indie-rock star retreats to the only place left with echoes of her former self: her family’s crumbling beachside estate. But music royalty isn’t built on silence, and Henley’s father, a rock legend clinging to his own fading relevance, can’t resist pulling her back into the spotlight. Between reluctant rehearsals, clashing personalities, and the ghost of what she’s lost, Henley must decide whether to play the encore she’s dreading or walk away for good. This isn’t a sanitized tale of healing. Broken is raw, immersive, and unapologetically messy—where grief isn’t tidied up in pop choruses and second chances come with bruises. Marshall’s prose is a live-wire, crackling with authenticity, while Piper’s narration crackles just as fiercely, modulating between Henley’s brittle wit and the gutting vulnerability beneath. The result? A romance that doesn’t just wring your heart—it leaves it exposed.

AudioBook Atlas

I went into Broken expecting a standard grief-to-recovery arc, but Marshall delivers something far grittier and more compelling. Henley isn’t a protagonist who sips tea and softly sobs—she’s a woman who punches walls, flirts with self-destruction, and still shows up for band practice because someone has to keep the lights on. Piper’s narration sells it all: her voice shifts from Henley’s dry, sarcastic cadence during barbs with her father to a husky, trembling whisper when the grief crashes over her like a wave. The production amplifies this, with subtle ambient sounds—a rainstorm on the studio’s skylight, the hum of an amp—making the audiobook feel like being locked in the room with them. That said, the side characters occasionally blur together, and the romance subplot feels a touch too convenient in places. Piper nails the emotional beats, but her performance can occasionally slip into overemphasis during Henley’s quieter moments, pulling me out of the scene. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping listen. Broken doesn’t just tug heartstrings; it rips them out and hands them back to you, still warm.
