But Not Forewarned

The inciting incident—a dog complaint—feels so mundane it’s almost funny, until you realize how expertly it’s being used to lure Wolf (and the listener) into deeper waters. The pacing is relentless, but not in a breathless way; it’s more like wading through a swamp, where every step forward sinks you a little deeper into the muck. Stone’s narration is a huge part of why this works. He doesn’t *perform* so much as *inhabit* Wolf, delivering lines with the dry, weary precision of a man who’s heard every lie this town has to offer. His timing is impeccable, especially in the interrogations, where a pause or a sigh carries as much weight as the dialogue. That said, this isn’t a perfect listen. The supporting cast sometimes blends together—too many Louisiana accents can start to sound indistinct in audio, and a few secondary characters lack the sharpness of Wolf or the main antagonist. And while the mystery itself is satisfyingly twisty, the resolution hinges on a reveal that might feel a touch *too* convenient for fans of ultra-realistic procedurals. But these are quibbles. What *But Not Forewarned* lacks in polish, it makes up for in atmosphere and attitude. The audiobook’s production is clean, with no jarring edits or volume spikes, and the runtime is tight—no fat here, just lean, mean storytelling. If you love your mysteries with a side of Southern Gothic dread and a protagonist who’s more flawed than heroic, this is your next listen. Just don’t expect to come out of Mechant Loup unscathed.
