About This Audiobook

John Finnemore’s *Cabin Pressure: The Complete Series 2* is a masterclass in comedic brevity, packed into just two and a half hours of pure, elaborately silly delight. Think *Fawlty Towers* meets a budget airline, where the only thing more underwhelming than the aircraft’s reliability is the pilots’ collective sense of competence. Captain Martin is a man perpetually on the verge of a breakdown, Douglas is a former RAF officer whose grasp of modern aviation seems to have expired in 1945, and Arthur, the put-upon loader, just wants to go home. Their misadventures—whether smuggling a dismembered effigy of Princess Diana or accidentally selling a customer’s prized violin as scrap metal—unfold with the relentless logic of a workplace sitcom stretched thin over a transatlantic flight gone wrong. Finnemore’s writing is razor-sharp, balancing absurdist humor with just enough pathos to make the chaos feel oddly heartfelt, like watching a hostage situation conducted entirely in passive-aggressive pleasantries.

What makes this audiobook a standout is its full-cast narration, led by Benedict Cumberbatch’s unmistakable voice as Martin, but elevated by the entire ensemble’s chemistry. Roger Allam’s Douglas is a particular triumph—a man who sounds like he’s reciting the Magna Carta mid-meltdown—and Stephanie Cole’s Mrs. Lithgow is a delightfully unhinged presence. The production is tight, with sound effects that never distract from the dialogue, making it feel like a live radio play crafted by people who’ve never forgiven aviation for existing. It’s the kind of comedy that rewards repeat listens, not because it’s complex, but because the delivery is so perfectly timed you’ll find yourself rewinding just to savor the pauses.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I approached *Cabin Pressure: The Complete Series 2* with cautious optimism, having once survived a Ryanair flight that felt like a hostage negotiation. Within ten minutes, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Martin had me cackling aloud—his ability to convey existential dread through a sigh is a gift to audiobooks. Roger Allam’s Douglas is the real star, though; his performance of a man clinging to the illusion of authority while his very existence contradicts it is so vivid I half-expected to hear him muttering about the decline of the British Empire mid-sentence. The stories themselves are gloriously petty: a trip to Gdansk to collect a bassoon devolves into a paranoid nightmare about smuggling, while a baggage handler’s misplaced confidence nearly sparks an international incident. The humor is dry, relentless, and often cruel in the most satisfying way—like if *The Office* was written by a man who’d once been stuck in an airport for 36 hours with no Wi-Fi. My only quibble is that the pacing occasionally stutters in the final act, with one storyline feeling slightly rushed compared to the rest. And while the ensemble work is stellar, Stephanie Cole’s Mrs. Lithgow—brilliant as she is—sometimes threatens to hijack scenes with her manic energy, making Douglas’s stoic suffering feel like a supporting act in his own tragedy. But these are minor nitpicks in what’s otherwise a near-flawless listening experience. By the time the crew accidentally auctions off a passenger’s Christmas presents as “collectibles,” you’ll be too busy laughing to care about the lack of character development. It’s the audiobook equivalent of a perfect layover: short, chaotic, and over far too soon.
