About This Audiobook

Cam Derringer isn’t your average PI—he’s a former cop turned bartender-cum-crime-solver in Key West, where the humidity and danger blend as seamlessly as rum and lime. This three-book box set throws you into a world where sun-bleached streets hide corrupt cops, smugglers with sun-gold smiles, and mysteries as tangled as the mangroves. Fortner’s writing crackles with the kind of gritty charm you’d expect from a detective who’d rather drink a Cuba Libre than crack a case by the book. The stories are lean, mean, and packed with the kind of slow-burn tension that lingers like the scent of salt on your skin long after you’ve closed the book. Each case feels fresh, but the throughline of Derringer’s personal demons—lost love, a brother’s betrayal, a city that chews up and spits out the weak—gives the series the weight of a character-driven thriller rather than a mere procedural. The bonus prequel? A sly, self-contained taste of what’s to come, delivered with the same sharp wit and no-nonsense attitude. If you’re craving escapism with bite, this isn’t your average beach read—it’s a survival guide for the morally ambiguous underbelly of paradise. The narration by Virtual Voice is a curious beast. The AI’s delivery is impressively smooth, with a cadence that mimics a seasoned voice actor’s ability to switch between grit and charm without missing a beat. The tone is conversational, as if Derringer himself is leaning over the bar to tell you about his latest mess—in a way that makes you want to order another drink and listen closer. The production quality is crisp, with no distracting artifacts, though the AI’s occasional struggle with authentic Southern inflections might pull a listener out of the immersion for a split second. Still, the performance elevates the material, giving Derringer’s wisecracks and weary introspections the right amount of oomph without overpowering the story’s inherent tension.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I went into this box set expecting a lighthearted, sun-drenched mystery series—a sort of *Knives Out* meets Key West tourism ad. What I got was something far more compelling: a gritty, character-driven noir that uses the tropical setting as a character itself, not just a backdrop. Cam Derringer is the kind of protagonist you love to follow despite his flaws—he’s stubborn, self-destructive, and has a knack for pissing off the wrong people, but his dry humor and weary wisdom make him impossible to dislike. Book one, *Tropical Something*, is the strongest of the three, with a plot that unfolds like a slow-burning fuse, culminating in a reveal that punches you in the gut. The cases are clever but never overly convoluted, and the stakes feel personal, not just academic. The bonus prequel, *Tropical Prequel*, is a smart addition, giving just enough backstory to make Derringer’s motivations feel earned without dumping exposition on the listener. That said, this audiobook isn’t without its hiccups. The narration by Virtual Voice is mostly excellent, but the AI’s attempt at a Southern drawl occasionally veers into caricature territory, and the lack of vocal variation between characters can make dialogue feel flat. There were moments where I found myself rewinding because the AI’s pacing didn’t quite match the natural rhythm of speech, especially in rapid-fire exchanges. The production is clean otherwise, with no issues with volume or background noise, but the narration quirks do pull you out of the story more often than I’d like. Despite that, the strength of the writing and the series’ addictive pull make up for it. If you’re a fan of noir that’s heavy on atmosphere and light on fluff, this is worth your time—just maybe don’t listen while you’re trying to relax on the beach.
