Camp Blaze, Author's Enhanced Edition

I’ll admit, I went into *Camp Blaze* expecting a by-the-numbers slasher, but Athan’s enhanced edition plays with the genre’s tropes in ways that kept me hooked—even when it frustrated me. The story’s strongest asset is its commitment to mystery over mayhem. Bodies vanish without a trace, the killer’s identity stays maddeningly obscure, and the camp’s history is doled out in cryptic fragments. It’s a bold choice, and for the most part, it works. The slow burn of the first half had me leaning in, but the payoff in the final act feels rushed, like Athan got cold feet about leaving *too* much unresolved. Jama Smith’s performance is a masterclass in tonal balance. His delivery for the protagonist, Jake, walks the line between weary skepticism and creeping dread, and he nails the shift when the violence erupts. That said, his female voices occasionally veer into caricature—less of an issue for side characters, but jarring for the few women with significant roles. The audio production is otherwise flawless: no distracting edits, no volume spikes, just the oppressive hum of cicadas and the occasional distant crack of a branch (or is it a machete?). If you love slashers that prioritize atmosphere over body count, this is a gem. But if you need neat answers or relentless action, you might leave wanting.
