His performance is particularly strong in the quieter moments, like when the rancher’s voice cracks with repressed guilt during a confession scene. That said, the audiobook’s production isn’t flawless: there’s a slight echo in a few early chapters that makes the dialogue feel disjointed, and Scarlato’s female voices occasionally veer into caricature (one secondary character sounds suspiciously like a 1950s housewife, which clashes with the 1870s setting). The real standout here is the pacing. Davies doesn’t rush the romance—there’s a full act where the leads are outright hostile, and the slow thaw feels organic, not contrived. The historical details (like the grim realities of homesteading or the casual racism of the era) are woven in without preaching, grounding the love story in something grittier than most genre fare. My only critique? The ending wraps up *too* neatly, undercutting some of the earlier moral ambiguity.
