Narratively, the audiobook stumbles only when rapid-fire political genealogy forces a cluster of aristocratic monologues that my brain short-circuits midway through—admittedly my fault, but those stretches could use a 3-second pause sting. What sells me is the vocal chemistry: Inugami and company refuse to soften Ursula’s edges. She’s not a chosen one; she’s a scrappy immigrant whose English accent (yes, English) cracks every time she’s called “frau,” yet those moments are never played for pity. If you love narratives where competence feels harder than magic, this is the audiobook equivalent of watching someone solve a Rubik’s Cube while juggling live eels. The pace is relentless, the moral calculus murky, and the narration so immersive I forgot to fast-forward during the 4 AM listen. Still, give yourself a minute to breathe after the court masquerade—your amygdala will thank you.
