His performance is dynamic enough to hold attention through the longest tales (the *Táin Bó Cúailnge* segment is a highlight, with Nolan switching between characters’ voices like a one-man theater troupe) but never overdoes the theatrics to the point of distraction. The pacing, at just over three hours, feels like a Goldilocks zone—not too short to miss the depth, not too long to test fidgety listeners. My almost-8-year-old was laughing at the giant’s foot crushed by a falling cow in one breath and asking serious questions about why the Celts buried their dead with weapons the next. That said, there are two hitches. First, the production quality isn’t flawless—the occasional abrupt fade-out between tracks (likely a digital quirk) jars more than once. Second, a few stories lean heavily on violence or abrupt death (Cú Chulainn’s battle frenzy isn’t exactly *light* material), so sensitive kids might need a heads-up. Still, the editorial choice to lean into these elements rather than soften them pays off: it normalizes the rawness of ancient tales without fetishizing it. The bonus glossary of Celtic terms at the end is a smart touch, though it’s a shame it’s only available in the digital companion (not the audiobook itself). Nolan’s delivery and the book’s refusal to talk down to its audience make this a standout.
