She *listens* to the silences, letting them swell until they’re almost unbearable, especially in the scene where the young man who lost his mother finally breaks down over a bowl of okonomiyaki. It’s devastating in the best way. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The sound mixing occasionally falters—once or twice, Padrão’s voice dips so low during emotional moments that I had to rewind, and the ambient kitchen sounds (a clever touch) sometimes clash with the narration. And while the interconnectedness of the stories is beautiful, the farmer’s arc feels slightly rushed compared to the others, his resolution arriving like a dish pulled from the oven too soon. Still, these are minor quibbles. By the end, I found myself craving two things: a bowl of Kotoko’s red bean soup and the courage to sit with my own ghosts as tenderly as these characters do.
