I admit, I was primarily drawn by the cover art and the 'Japanese comfort' vibe, but The Chibineko Kitchen exceeded my expectations. It's less of a frantic genre plot and more of a gentle unfolding, much like the soup it celebrates. The central character, navigating grief and finding solace in a quirky inherited kitchen, feels incredibly real. Hanako Footman’s narration is a star here, lending a consistently soothing and calm tone that perfectly complements the story's reflective nature. She brings nuance to the relationships, especially with the special cat, making their interactions feel tender and authentic.
