I’ll admit, I approached this with skepticism—how could a 19th-century collection of ghost stories possibly compete with modern horror’s relentless pacing? But Stoker’s prose, when given space to breathe, is far more insidious than any jump cut. Richard Pasco’s narration is the secret weapon here. His delivery in *The Judge’s House* is a masterclass in restraint: the slow, deliberate cadence of a man who’s already seen the worst, paired with the faintest tremor when the unseen horror finally stirs. It’s chilling in a way that lingers. That said, the collection isn’t flawless. *The Squaw* suffers from its era’s racial insensitivity, which undercuts its otherwise effective dread, and *The Watter’s Mou’* leans too hard into dialect for its own good, making an already murky plot harder to follow. The production itself is clean but unremarkable—no fancy sound design, just the crackle of a well-worn record. That’s fine by me; Stoker’s words deserve the spotlight. If you’re looking for a horror experience that rewards patience and lets dread simmer, this is it. But if you crave visceral shocks or modern pacing, you might want to keep scrolling.
