What I got instead was a masterclass in narrative misdirection—where the ‘action’ is a sports festival, but the real tension is in who’s manipulating whom before the starting pistol even fires. Zion Jang’s narration is the audiobook’s secret weapon: his delivery is so measured, so *controlled*, that when Ayanokouji finally drops a bombshell observation, it hits like a knife twist. That said, Jang’s pacing in the first hour feels *just* a hair too slow, as if he’s still finding the rhythm between Ayanokouji’s cold analysis and the rare bursts of urgency. Once the sports festival kicks off, though, the performance locks in—especially in the one-on-one psychological duels, where Jang’s subtle shifts in tone make it clear who’s winning the conversation before a word is spoken. The story’s biggest strength—and, for some, its biggest frustration—is how ruthlessly it adheres to its own logic. There’s no hand-holding here: if a character makes a stupid move, they *lose*, and the narrative treats their failure as inevitable, not tragic. I loved that, but I can see how it might feel bleak for listeners who prefer their protagonists to, y’know, *care* about people. The production is clean, with no distracting background noise, though I wished for slightly more distinction between female voices in crowded scenes. Still, the audiobook’s real triumph is how it turns a *school story* into a thriller—where the biggest twist isn’t *what* happens, but *why* it was allowed to happen in the first place.
