I went into Cold Comfort expecting another tired pandemic survival story, but Medbury’s approach caught me off guard. The premise is simple on paper—what if only kids and young adults survived a weaponized virus?—but the execution is anything but. The lack of hand-wringing over the collapse of civilization is refreshing. These characters aren’t mourning the world they lost; they’re too busy trying to figure out how to carve out a future in one that wants nothing to do with them. The dialogue, especially among the younger survivors, feels authentically jaded and opportunistic, which makes their occasional moments of vulnerability hit harder. Adam Barr’s narration is the linchpin here. His delivery isn’t showy, but it’s precisely calibrated to sell the story’s urgency. He nails the exhausted monotone of a teen who’s seen too much, then suddenly snaps into a primal scream when the violence erupts. The production quality is top-notch—no distracting background noise, no inconsistent volume levels. That said, I found myself wishing for a bit more depth in the supporting characters. Medbury focuses so tightly on the protagonist and his immediate circle that the world beyond them often feels like a blur. It’s a minor gripe in an otherwise gripping listen, but it occasionally pulled me out of the immersion. Still, if you’re craving a post-apocalyptic tale that’s more about survival than sentimentality, this one delivers.
