Cold Malice

I’ll admit, I approached *Cold Malice* with the usual Nordic-noir fatigue—how many more gloomy detectives in sweaters could I take? Then Gunna Gísladóttir walked into the interrogation room, and I was hooked. This isn’t some tortured genius solving crimes in isolation; Gunna’s a middle-aged cop with a bad back, a messy personal life, and a refusal to play by the book when the book is clearly wrong. The case—a vengeful ex-con targeting corrupt officials—should be open-and-shut, but Bates twists it into a mirror held up to Iceland’s justice system, and Gunna’s caught in the reflection. Mel Hudson’s narration is *exceptional* in its restraint. She doesn’t overdo the Icelandic accents (thank god), but she nails the cadence of a woman who’s seen too much yet still cracks jokes in the break room. The production’s clean, though I’ll dock half a point for a few awkward pauses during scene transitions—nothing ruinous, but noticeable if you’re listening closely. My only real critique? The villain’s backstory, while compelling, gets a tad *too* sympathetic in the final act. I wanted more moral gray, less outright justification. Still, the audiobook’s strength lies in its authenticity: the way Gunna’s car won’t start in the cold, the way her colleagues groan about paperwork, the way Hudson makes a simple “*fuck*” sound like a whole paragraph of exhaustion. If you’re tired of crime fiction that takes itself too seriously, this is your antidote—smart, snappy, and just dirty enough to feel real.
