Todd MacDonald’s narration is the secret weapon here—his voice has the clarity of a morning radio host and the gravitas of a historian, a rare balance that makes dense concepts feel almost cinematic. He doesn’t dumb anything down; instead, he turns abstractions like ‘trade routes’ and ‘resource extraction’ into tangible forces by giving them human faces, like the Dutch in Indonesia or the British in India. The short runtime works in its favor, but I wish the production included subtle sound design—think distant ship horns or marketplace chatter—just to ground the listener further in the setting. Pacing is flawless until the final minute, where the abrupt shift from European expansion to modern impacts feels a bit rushed, as if the narrator is trying to cram an epilogue into a postscript. That said, the lack of melodrama is refreshing; this isn’t a morality play, and that’s exactly what makes it honest. My 7-year-old’s reaction? A string of questions about ‘why people did that,’ which is the highest praise possible. If you’re hunting for a way to introduce colonialism without triggering bedtime resistance, this is the needle in the haystack.
