I’ve listened to plenty of tech audiobooks where the narrator races through explanations like they’re afraid of silence, but McNatt resists that trap. His tone suggests someone who’s genuinely excited about the subject, which makes the material feel less like a chore and more like a conversation. One moment that stuck with me was his explanation of how routers and switches handle data differently; he used real-world analogies (like traffic cops vs. intersection managers) that suddenly made the OSI model click in a way no diagram ever did. That said, the book isn’t without flaws. Wired’s attempt to keep things "simple" occasionally leaves gaps that feel jarring. For example, when covering IPv6, he glosses over address notation rules almost too quickly, assuming prior knowledge he elsewhere insists isn’t necessary. The production also could’ve benefited from a glossary appendix—sometimes, you’re mid-paragraph and desperate for a quick definition of a term like "TCP windowing," but there’s no audio cue or PDF companion to bail you out. Still, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise excellent introduction. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by networking books that assume you already know what a MAC address is, this audiobook is the patient tutor you’ve been waiting for.
