Foster nails the audiobook’s tonal whiplash: his Sam Johnstone sounds like he’s been chewing gravel since dawn, a detail that sells the book’s weary, no-bullshit vibe. The performance isn’t showy; it’s surgical, especially during Johnstone’s late-night confessions to a barmaid who might be the only person in Wyoming who doesn’t owe him favors. Chandler’s plotting is surgical too, but I wish he’d resisted the urge to spell out every clue—there’s a moment midway where a key piece of evidence is handled like a tennis ball tossed between characters, and Foster’s delivery almost veers into over-explaining. The Wyoming setting grounds the story in a way that feels lived-in; Chandler’s descriptions of dust-choked highways and courthouses that smell like old coffee cups do more for atmosphere than a dozen description dumps. The final act stumbles slightly—Johnstone’s moral reckoning arrives faster than a speeding ticket in a school zone—but the book earns its bruises.
