Jim Clemente’s narration is the secret weapon of *Criminal Network*. His voice has the cadence of an investigator who’s seen it all—every hack, every lie, every near-miss is delivered with a gravitas that makes the stories feel urgent, not just informative. There’s a moment early on where he describes a hacker’s taunt, delivered directly to the FBI, and his tone shifts from clinical to outright menace. It’s the kind of performance that makes you hit pause just to let the weight sink in. The book’s strength lies in its specificity. McDonnell doesn’t just recount cybercrimes; he tracks the real people behind them, from the low-level grifters to the alleged state operatives pulling the strings. The pacing is relentless, but not at the expense of detail—the passages on how hackers launder money through cryptocurrency are so clear you’ll feel like you could do it yourself (please don’t). My only quibble? Some of the Russian names and aliases are thrown at you fast, and unless you’re fluent, you might find yourself rewinding to catch them. Also, the epilogue on cybersecurity fixes feels a bit like an afterthought compared to the rest of the book’s intensity. But those are minor gripes—this is a true crime listen that’ll have you looking over your shoulder, even after it’s over.
