Critical Failures VIII

I’ll be honest: I approached *Critical Failures VIII* with the wariness of a player whose last character died to a trap they *swore* they checked for. But Bevan disarms that skepticism fast by leaning into the series’ strengths—namely, that these characters are *idiots*, but in the most entertaining way possible. The split-party structure could’ve been a mess, but it actually sharpens the stakes. One group’s desperate negotiation with a bureaucratic lich had me cackling, while another’s impromptu heist (complete with a goblin in a fake mustache) played out like a farce with real consequences. Sleep’s narration is a masterclass in tonal whiplash; he’ll pivot from a growling orc to a nasally NPC so smoothly you’ll forget it’s one guy. That said, this isn’t a flawless roll. The pacing stumbles in the middle—Bevan’s love for tangential gags occasionally derails momentum, and a subplot involving a sentient magic item feels undercooked compared to the main chaos. And while Sleep’s character voices are impressive, his female characters sometimes slip into similar cadences, which pulled me out of the moment. But these are quibbles. The real magic is how the book *feels* like sitting at a table with your most chaotic friends, where the DM is equal parts exasperated and brilliant. If you’re here for the series, this delivers.
