The drysine data-core isn’t just a MacGuffin; it’s a ticking bomb, and the way Shepherd weaves its significance into the Parren power struggles gives the plot a urgency that’s rare in the genre. That said, the sheer *number* of Parren factions and their intertwined histories can feel overwhelming at times—this isn’t a book you can zone out to. You’ll need to pay attention, but the payoff is worth it. John Lee’s performance is the glue that holds it all together. His delivery is measured yet intense, with a knack for making even the most technical exposition feel like a whispered warning. The Parren voices, in particular, are unsettlingly distinct—less ‘alien’ in the cartoonish sense and more like listening to a species that *thinks* differently, which sells the cultural divide. My only critique? The pacing drags slightly in the middle during some of the ship-repair sequences, where the tension dips.
