Femi Oke’s narration is the secret weapon here—she shifts seamlessly between the victim’s fractured English, the cold bureaucratic German officials, and the smug patter of traffickers without ever sounding like she’s performing. Her voice doesn’t just carry the story; it *haunts* it, especially in the scenes where the protagonist’s fear is so palpable you can taste it. That said, the audiobook stumbles in spots. The production team leans too hard on abrupt chapter breaks, which occasionally jolt you out of the narrative’s momentum. And while the pacing is generally taut, the latter third drags slightly as the legal aftermath sprawls into months of hearings and delays—necessary context, sure, but not exactly edge-of-your-seat material. Still, these are minor quibbles. What lingers is the story’s refusal to offer easy answers or catharsis. The real-life horror of how a system designed to protect people failed so spectacularly hangs over every chapter, and Oke’s narration ensures it sticks to your ribs long after the last word fades. This isn’t true crime for the faint of heart, nor is it the kind of tidy, moralizing tale some podcasts peddle. It’s messy, infuriating, and profoundly human—a reminder that evil doesn’t always announce itself with a knife in the dark. Sometimes it hides in plain sight, wrapped in paperwork and polite smiles.
