I’ll admit, I went into *Cykelrytteren* expecting another by-the-numbers Nordic noir, but what I got was something far more interesting—and frustrating. The premise is deceptively simple: a bike courier is found dead, and George Cross, a criminal assistant with a knack for patterns, becomes obsessed with the case. But this isn’t about solving a murder so much as it’s about dissecting the layers of a life that society would otherwise ignore. Sullivan’s writing is sharp, but it’s Gulstad’s narration that sells it. His delivery is measured, almost clinical, yet there’s an undercurrent of exhaustion in his voice that makes Cross feel like a man teetering on the edge of something—burnout, breakdown, or worse. The pacing is where things get tricky. The first half moves like a cyclist climbing a hill: deliberate, methodical, with bursts of insight that keep you engaged. But around the midpoint, the plot starts to meander, mirroring Cross’s own spiraling focus. Some listeners might find this deliberate ambiguity maddening—there are threads left dangling, questions that never get neat answers—but that’s also what makes it feel real. The production is flawless (no distracting edits or volume shifts), though I wish the sound design had leaned harder into the urban atmosphere—more ambient traffic, the hum of bike tires on wet pavement—to deepen the immersion. Still, if you’re tired of crime stories that tie up every loose end, this one’s for you. Just don’t expect to walk away feeling satisfied. Expect to feel *haunted*.
