I’ll admit, I rolled my eyes at the ‘forced marriage to my enemy’ premise—until Bradley Ford’s Luc growled his first line like a man who’s already lost everything and doesn’t care if he burns the world on his way out. *Damaged & Deadly* works because it commits fully to its own insanity, and the narration sells every second of it. Ford’s performance is a masterclass in controlled rage; you can *hear* the bruises under his voice, the way his accent thickens when he’s lying. Kasi Hollowell’s heroine, though, is the revelation—she doesn’t just narrate her fear, she *weapons* it, turning vulnerability into a blade. Their chemistry is less ‘will they/won’t they’ and more ‘will they survive each other,’ which is far more interesting. The production isn’t flawless—the transitions between narrators can feel abrupt in high-tension scenes, and Rock Engle’s villainous monologues occasionally veer into mustache-twirling territory. But the pacing? Relentless. Smyth structures the plot like a heist gone wrong: just when you think you’ve found solid ground, the floor drops out. The romantic suspense genre often softens its edges, but this audiobook leans into the jagged bits—the awkward silence after a murder, the way ‘I love you’ sounds like a threat. It’s not for everyone (the body count is high, the consent is *complicated*), but if you like your romance with a side of existential dread and narrators who sound like they’ve actually lived through hell, this is your next obsession. Just don’t blame me if you start side-eyeing your own wedding vows afterward.
