About This Audiobook

Darkness isn’t just another YA fantasy—it’s a razor-wire thriller draped in ancient myth, where every clue Christina uncovers tightens the vise around two collapsing worlds. Hannah-Louise Smith sidesteps tired tropes with a protagonist who’s equal parts scholar and survivor, digging through forgotten histories and linguistic riddles to stop a force that erases legends. This isn’t magic as decoration; it’s a weaponized legacy, and the cost of failure is oblivion. The pacing thrums with urgency, but never sacrifices the emotional core: a daughter’s love for a father slipping beyond reach. Ronnie Rowlands’ narration is the secret pulse of this audiobook. His voice doesn’t just perform the text—it lives in its shadows. He gives Christina a tightly controlled intensity, her intelligence and fear etched into every measured pause, while shifting seamlessly into the guttural menace of Oxyllion. The production design deserves praise, too: subtle ambient textures—a whisper through crumbling stone, the echo of a vanished name—elevate the listening experience from performance to immersion. If you crave mythology with teeth and a story that treats its young heroine like a strategist, not a symbol, this audiobook carves its own space in the genre.

Editor's Review

AudioBook Atlas

I went in expecting a derivative myth reboot—what I got was a taut, cerebral race against erasure, masterfully voiced by Ronnie Rowlands. His ability to modulate Christina’s voice—never melodramatic, always simmering with suppressed panic—is what makes the character feel real. He doesn’t shout her courage; he lets it unfold in quiet resolve, which hits harder. The way he voices Oxyllion, a presence more felt than seen, gives me chills: a low, textured distortion that sounds like language unraveling. The story’s structure—threads of ancient text, family secrets, and political tension in the mythic realm—could’ve felt cluttered, but the audiobook’s pacing keeps everything locked in rhythm. That said, the middle section drags slightly under exposition; a few of the linguistic puzzles, while clever, slow momentum. Also, I wish secondary characters had more vocal distinction—many blend into similar timbres, making dialogue tags crucial. Still, the final act delivers with relentless precision. Smith doesn’t hand-hold, and Rowlands doesn’t soften the blows. By the end, I wasn’t just listening—I was holding my breath.
