I’ll admit, I went into *Darkness* expecting another run-of-the-mill ‘human meets alien’ romance, but Dohner subverted my expectations within the first hour. Kat isn’t just a plucky undercover agent—she’s a *good* one, with a survivalist’s instincts and a mouth that gets her into (and out of) trouble. The way she navigates the NSO’s power structures, using her wit as both shield and weapon, makes her one of the more compelling heroines I’ve encountered in the genre. That said, the middle act drags slightly with repetitive ‘will they/won’t they’ tension between Kat and Darkness (yes, that’s his name—lean into it). The pacing picks up once the central conflict kicks into gear, but I found myself fast-forwarding through a few of the introspective monologues that hammered home Kat’s internal conflict a beat too long. Vanessa Chambers’ performance is *chef’s kiss*—she nails the dry humor in Kat’s dialogue and gives the NSO males distinct vocal textures, so you’re never confused about who’s speaking. Her delivery of Darkness’ lines is particularly standout; she doesn’t just growl, she *vibrates* with restrained fury, making his rare moments of vulnerability hit even harder. The production quality is flawless, with no awkward pauses or volume inconsistencies, though I did notice a slight echo in a few of the more intense scenes—nothing deal-breaking, but audible if you’re listening on high-quality equipment. Where this audiobook truly excels is in its atmosphere: the clinking of chains, the hum of the compound’s force fields, the way silence itself feels like a character. If you love your romance with a side of danger, a heroine who fights back, and narration that makes your skin prickle, *Darkness* delivers—just be prepared to power through a few slower patches to get to the payoff.
