Das Känguru-Manifest

I went into *Das Känguru-Manifest* expecting a quirky German satire and came out the other side questioning my own sanity—and honestly, that’s a win. Marc-Uwe Kling’s narration is the secret weapon here: he doesn’t just read his own work; he performs it like a one-man theater troupe, shifting between the kangaroo’s manic fervor, the artist’s exhausted resignation, and the occasional third-person choral chant with the effortless precision of a seasoned voice actor. The pacing is relentless, clocking in at just over five hours but feeling like a two-hour stand-up set because there’s not a single wasted word. That said, the audiobook’s biggest strength—its chaotic energy—is also its occasional Achilles’ heel. Some jokes land with the force of a sledgehammer, while others feel like inside baseball that might fly over listeners unfamiliar with German leftist memes. And while the penguin conspiracy is endlessly entertaining, the third act’s shift into full-blown allegory at times feels like it’s overstaying its welcome, verging on self-parody. Still, these are minor quibbles for a work this bold and this fun. By the time the kangaroo’s revolutionary anthem blasts through your speakers, you’ll either be ready to join a commune or at least reconsider your life choices—and that’s the magic of Kling’s work.
