The pacing is meticulous—slow enough to savor the poetry of biological metaphors, but relentless enough to keep you racing through the chapters on cancer’s cellular betrayals or the mind-bending mechanics of immune memory. That said, the audiobook’s 20-plus hours might frustrate listeners who prefer punchy, TED Talk-style science. Mukherjee occasionally indulges in tangential historical vignettes (looking at you, Robert Hooke’s diary pages) that derail the momentum, but they’re forgivable because his storytelling is so damn compelling. Pessler’s only misstep is occasionally over-enunciating scientific terms that don’t need it, which jars in moments of high drama. Still, this isn’t just an audiobook—it’s an immersion chamber, and I emerged with a deeper, more poetic understanding of what it means to be alive.
