Journey to the Edge of Reason

I approached *Journey to the Edge of Reason* with the skepticism of someone who’s slogged through too many biographies of dead geniuses, but Budiansky’s storytelling won me over. Souer’s narration is a revelation—his voice carries the weight of Gödel’s despair and the razor’s edge of his insights without over-dramatizing. The audiobook’s pacing is taut, especially in the chapters on Gödel’s collaboration (and eventual falling-out) with Albert Einstein, where the tension feels almost cinematic. My only quibble is that Budiansky occasionally lingers too long on Gödel’s personal quirks (his hypochondria, his vegetarianism) at the expense of deeper dives into how his theorems actually work. Still, the production is flawless, with seamless editing that never distracts from Souer’s nuanced performance. What lingers isn’t just Gödel’s tragic end, but the chilling idea that his ideas might have saved us—or doomed us—depending on who wielded them. Highly recommended for anyone who’s ever stared at a math problem and wondered if they were staring into an abyss.
