Das Parfum

I’ll admit, I approached *Das Parfum* with skepticism. A novel about a perfumer-savant sounded like niche historical fiction, but within 20 minutes, Korte’s narration had me gripped—not by plot (there’s barely any), but by the *atmosphere*. His voice is the auditory equivalent of a damp Parisian alley: rich, slightly decayed, and impossible to ignore. When Grenouille first ‘sniffs’ a woman to death in the opening act, Korte’s delivery is so chillingly matter-of-fact that I actually paused the audiobook to stare into the middle distance. That’s the kind of power this performance wields. The pacing, however, is a deliberate slog. Süskind lingers on Grenouille’s solitary years in the mountains like a director holding a shot too long, and while Korte’s narration keeps it from dragging, some listeners might chafe at the lack of traditional momentum. The production is flawless—no distracting edits or volume shifts—but I docked half a star for the occasional moment where the prose’s repetition (Grenouille *always* ‘stood motionless,’ *always* ‘inhaled deeply’) feels more tedious than hypnotic. Still, the payoff—the final act’s twisted transcendence—justifies every slow-burn minute. If you love audiobooks that *demand* your attention, that reward patience with something haunting, this is a masterclass. Just don’t expect to feel clean afterward.
