About This Audiobook

If you crave a post-apocalyptic tale that ditches the usual zombie hordes for something far more insidious, *Days of Want* delivers a brutal gut-punch. An EMP blasts the modern world into darkness, leaving Maddie Langston stranded in a frozen Chicago airport with no plan, no supplies, and no one she can trust. Payne’s series thrives on the unrelenting tension of human desperation—less *Mad Max*, more *The Road* meets *The Stand*, where survival isn’t just about food and water but about outsmarting ruthless factions and your own crumbling moral compass. The audiobook’s strength lies in its refusal to romanticize collapse; these aren’t hardened heroes, but ordinary people pushed to their limits, and Pierce’s narration amplifies every cracked voice and desperate choice with a grittiness that pulls you into the chaos like a magnet. The world-building is a masterclass in gradual revelation—no info-dumps, just the slow accretion of horror as the grid’s death spiral tightens its grip.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Kevin Pierce is the secret weapon here, and it’s a shame the cover doesn’t trumpet his name as boldly as it should. His voice has this knack for shifting between exhaustion and adrenaline in the span of a single sentence, making Maddie’s ordeal feel visceral. The first book’s airport standoff is a masterstroke of claustrophobic dread, and Pierce sells it by modulating his tone like a metronome ticking down to disaster. Later, when the story sprawls into rural mayhem, he nails the grit of a world where every word spoken could get you killed. That said, the later books slow to a crawl—Pace’s middle trilogy sags under its own ambition, trading momentum for subplots that drag. The narration can’t fully compensate for a story that occasionally forgets its own urgency. Still, by the final arc, Payne rightens the ship with a brutal, open-ended climax that lingers like a bruise. If you’re after a survivalist saga that chews through hope but spits out character, this is your audiobook.
