Deeper than the Dead

I went into *Deeper than the Dead* expecting another formulaic crime drama, but Debra Webb delivered something far more nuanced and haunting. Elise Arsenault’s narration sold the emotional stakes—her voice cracked just enough when Molly’s past resurfaced, and her Southern inflections never felt lazy or clichéd. The first act drags slightly as the bones are uncovered and the town’s history is pieced together, but once the skeletons start tumbling out of closets (literal and figurative), the story takes off like a rabbit in headlights. Webb’s strength is in her character work; Molly isn’t just a tough detective, she’s a woman unraveling at the seams, and Arsenault’s performance makes you ache for her. My biggest critique? The resolution wraps up a tad too neatly, tying up loose ends with surgical precision but glossing over some darker implications. And while Arsenault’s performance is stellar, there were a few instances where her pacing faltered in minor scenes, making them feel a beat too drawn out. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping listen. If you’re craving a thriller with depth, moral gray areas, and a narrator who doesn’t hold back, this audiobook delivers.
