I’ll be honest: *Book 10* is the first in this series that left me physically tense. Not because of the action—though the set pieces are as kinetic as ever—but because of how *personal* the stakes feel. Zac’s reunion with Earth isn’t a hero’s welcome; it’s a funeral for the world he knew. TheFirstDefier excels at making systemic oppression *visceral*—the way the System’s ‘mandate’ isn’t just a backdrop but an active predator, whispering in Zac’s ear during every choice. When a side character’s death hit, I actually paused the audiobook. Not because it was shocking (this series has never shied from loss), but because Proczko’s delivery made it *matter*—his voice broke just enough to sell the grief without melodrama. That said, the pacing *stumbles* in the middle. The Zecia Sector’s political maneuvering, while necessary, drags compared to the tight, survivalist urgency of earlier books. A few chapters feel like table-setting for Book 11, and Proczko’s narration—usually electric—can’t quite mask the exposition dumps. And while the dragon lore deepens intriguingly, the mythical creatures here often feel like set dressing rather than active players. Still, the finale’s brutal climax (and that *twist* involving the Orom) more than makes up for it. If you’re invested in Zac’s journey, this is the book where the series stops being about leveling up and starts being about what you’re willing to *burn* to stay alive.
