Arthur’s sections are a slow-motion car crash—you wince as Teschner’s narration drags each word through the muck of self-loathing, his voice so thick with phlegm and regret you’ll swear you can smell the stale takeout in Arthur’s house. It’s *uncomfortable*, and that’s the point. Meanwhile, Niesner’s Kel is all sharp edges and defensive humor, his performance so authentic you’ll forget he’s not a real 17-year-old from Queens. The contrast between the two narrators isn’t just effective; it’s essential, turning their eventual, tentative connection into something earned rather than contrived. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The pacing in Arthur’s chapters can feel *deliberately* sluggish—there’s a 20-minute stretch where he just... eats cereal. And while the lack of musical score or sound effects keeps the focus on the text, there are moments (like Kel’s basketball games) where a little ambient noise might’ve heightened the tension. Still, the production’s restraint ultimately serves the story’s themes: this is a novel about the quiet violence of stagnation, and the audiobook trusts its listeners to lean into the silence. By the final act, when Arthur and Kel’s paths intersect in a way that’s both inevitable and surprising, you’ll realize Moore and her narrators have pulled off something rare—a story about redemption that doesn’t once utter the word.
