I started listening to Desperados of Mars expecting another breezy space adventure, but Olson yanked me into a pressure cooker of survival horror set 140 million miles from Earth. Roybal’s narration is a masterclass in tension—her breathy, strained delivery when Luke’s helmet cracks mirrors the suffocating dread of vacuum exposure, while her icy calm when describing the Martian landscape grounds the chaos in something almost clinical. The audiobook’s pacing is relentless; there’s no slow burn here, just a white-knuckle sprint from one life-or-death scenario to the next. The science feels meticulously researched, from the physics of low-gravity combat to the brutal reality of radiation exposure. That said, the middle act drags slightly when the focus shifts to backstory and lore dumps. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s a moment where the audiobook risks losing listeners who want nothing but escalating tension. Roybal’s performance is the standout, though. She nails the unspoken horror of being stranded without a suit—every inhale is a gamble, every exhale a potential rupture.
