Devils in Exile

Jim Frangione turns in a performance that’s less narration and more a masterclass in controlled chaos. His voice—gruff, measured, with a hint of weariness—perfectly embodies Neal Maven’s journey from haunted soldier to reluctant outlaw. Frangione doesn’t overact the violence or undercut the tension; he lets the words do the heavy lifting, and when Maven snaps into action, his delivery punches with the weight of a .45. The production is crisp, with seamless scene transitions that avoid the pitfalls of amateur audiobook editing. That said, Hogan’s script isn’t flawless. The romantic subplot between Maven and a local bartender feels tacked on, like it was shoehorned in to soften the protagonist’s edges—a misstep in an otherwise punchy narrative. And while the Boston dialect is handled with care, a few too many secondary characters blur together, their accents and mannerisms indistinct. Still, these are minor quibbles in a thriller that delivers on its promise: a relentless, morally murky ride where the only true devil is the one you can’t see coming. Frangione’s performance elevates it from good to great, making *Devils in Exile* the kind of audiobook you’ll finish in a weekend—then immediately wish you hadn’t, because the aftermath leaves you hollowed out.
