Mei’s performance sells this desperation perfectly—his Diabolik isn’t the smug, untouchable phantom of the comics, but a man whose voice tightens when he’s outmaneuvered, whose laughter sounds a beat too forced. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The middle act sags under overly dense tradecraft jargon (a risk when blending spy thriller with crime noir), and Mei’s delivery occasionally stumbles over rapid-fire Italian bureaucratic titles—though his recovery is so seamless you might not notice unless you’re listening critically.
